Understanding Complex Realities

The mysteries of our world seem enigmatic until the truth is uncovered. Delve into intricate issues, explore and understand these complex realities

Ever wondered what its like to stand on the edge of the world?

This photo was taken during one of my hikes in Scotland. I went there alone, starting my journey early in the morning at 6 AM. I took a bus from the center of Edinburgh, and an hour later, I found myself in an unfamiliar area, guided only by my phone and its GPS.The mix of emotions was intense – nervousness, fear, thrill, and excitement all at once. The thrill of exploring a new place was palpable, knowing that once visited, the novelty would fade. After walking another hour and a half from the bus stop to the foothill, I still had no clear destination. My gut feeling guided me as I snapped photos along the way. Reaching the top after nearly two hours of hiking, I was greeted by one of the most magnificent views I had ever seen. Standing alone at the summit, I realized how small I was compared to the vast world around me.It’s fascinating how one small human being can make a significant impact on the world. One word from one person can sometimes change the tide of history.

This profound experience got me thinking about why we feel so fulfilled when surrounded by nature. Is it the sense of adventure, the peace, or something deeper?

Research & Study

Factors: Why we can be attached to nature?

In one of the study by M.McDonal, S.Wearing and J.Ponting, there are fews reason why this phenomenon happened. Based on their survey conducted, below were the few factors mentioned:Aesthetic Qualities: Deeply absorbed by the beauty of wilderness, such as sunsets, forests, mountains, and wildlife.
Escape: Wilderness provided a stark contrast to urban life, allowing solitude and reflection away from daily pressures.
Overcoming Limitation: The challenges of wilderness travel created a sense of achievement.
Biophilia Hypothesis
This hypothesis, popularized by biologist Edward O. Wilson, suggests that humans have an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life.
The hypothesis posits that humans are biologically programmed to have an affinity for nature. This is rooted in our evolutionary history, where survival depended on our ability to understand and interact with the natural environment. We can see how this is being praticed in the urban design where buildings start to incorporate green spaces such as green roofs, rooftop gardens and tree-lined streets.

Conclusion

Getting closer to nature is super important for our overall well-being. Adding more green spaces into our daily lives can really boost our quality of life and help us live more sustainably. As what I have gone through, it was really a gem to be able to experience that.
